Residence Q & A

1. What will the residence be like?

2. What will my room be like?

3. How are roommates chosen?

4. What meals are served on campus?

5. Will I be able to leave the campus without adult supervision?

What will the residence be like?

Most residences are either on the same campus as the classrooms or they are within easy walking/commuting distance of the school.  Residence facilities typically consist of bedrooms (single or shared), washrooms and toilets (private or shared), lounge facilities, and a cafeteria or dining hall. Some have outside patios and sports fields.  Many residence programs take place on the campus of boarding schools. Other residence programs use university residence facilities. Some schools, like the Mature Teen Residence Program in Malaga, even own and operate their own residences on campus that are more like 2 or 3 star hotels. While the residences may not always be fancy you can expect them to be well-located, clean, comfortable and safe.

What will my room be like?

You can expect your room to be clean and comfortable and to have one single bed per person, a dresser and/or wardrobe, a desk and a chair.  While many residence programs offer single rooms, some have shared rooms so you will have another student from the program as a roommate.  Depending on the program location you will either have a private washroom/toilet or you will be sharing the washroom(s)/toilet(s) with other students on your floor.  Details on room options can be found on the overview page for your program of interest.

How are roommates chosen?

If you are in a shared room , your host school will try to place you in a room with a student/students from another country.  They will also try to choose someone who is of similar age and they will always be the same gender. If you are coming with a friend you can request to room together but we usually recommend that you stay in separate rooms so you can each meet as many students as possible and get the most out of the program.

What meals are served on campus?

In most cases, you will have breakfast and dinner everyday in the residence cafeteria or dining hall.  Breakfast is usually toast or bread and cereal with juice, coffe and tea.  Dinner is a full meal and a choice of entrees is offered each day including vegetarian options.  Lunch can be a bagged lunch (sandwich and fruit), a cafeteria meal or a meal in a local restaurant. This depends on the program and what meal option you choose.  Specific details about meals can be found on the overview page for each program.

Will I be able to leave the campus without adult supervision?

This depends on the level of supervision for your particular program. For high supervision programs you are typically not allowed to leave campus at any time unchaperoned. For medium supervision programs you usually have some time during the week when you can leave campus unchaperoned so long as you are in groups of at least 3 students and have the course director's (and your parent's) approval. For low supervision programs you are welcome to come and go as you please. For program specific information, please click on the Supervision link at the top of the overview page for your program of interest.
