A Gap Year Language Program

It wasn’t too long ago that the idea of taking a year off before college or university studies was seen as the first stop towards a career at the local gas station.

We know now that it’s the perfect time to take a deep breath and consider your next steps. A gap year, used wisely, will help you gain new perspectives and acquire useful skills that will make a big difference in your university and college studies. During my gap year (many years ago before it was known as a gap year!) I lived in Germany for 3 months which, in hindsight, would have been very difficult for me to do at any other time in my life. It gave me an opportunity to grow as a young adult, learn about a new culture, and helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses better.

Travel should definitely be part of your plans. This is the chance to see the world possibly on your own for the first time! It’s also the perfect opportunity to become fluent in a second or third language. Here are just 3 benefits:

  1. Daily immersion: After 3 or 4 hours of studying in class, you can head out into the community and APPLY what you’ve learned on a daily basis.
  2. International academic experience: One of the side benefits is discovering how students from other parts of the world study.
  3. Personal growth: Learning how to take care of yourself in a completely different culture in a completely different language has an enormously positive impact on confidence and self-esteem.

Whether it’s 3 weeks or 3 months, a gap year language program should be a key part of your gap year experience.

The Learning Traveller Partners with The Mindful Traveller

The stage was set with fine wines from France, Spain and Italy, hors d’ouevres were ready to go, the music was playing and the information booklets were together.

Travel agents from The Mindful Traveller attended an information session hosted by The Learning Traveller last week.

We were thrilled because The Mindful Traveller, with offices in both Guelph and Kitchener, has en eye on the unique travel market. A partnership between the two companies has been in the works for a while and along with our 50 Plus programs, it has now taken off! The Learning Traveller has a special niche in the travel market with language holidays and with The Mindful Traveller always looking for another special product to offer their customers, it’s a perfect match!

The conversation ranged from our already popular teen programs to the spring offerings for the 50 Plus traveller, group vacations and everything in between including the new and very popular gap year programs. We were very pleased to have two clients join us and share their experiences with the travel agents. Susan and Brian attended the Malaga 50 Plus holiday in Spain and they were able to give us a very personal perspective of their experience. Susan, a former principal, and Brian, a retired businessman, were wonderfully outgoing. It was great to see that they both enjoyed the program and had different learning styles but both definitely got a lot out of the holiday. In fact, they decided that they would go back for another session in the future. Now that was good news!

The fun part of the night was the group talking about where we would like to go on a language vacation.  The most popular destination for this group was Spain. Was it Susan and Brian’s influence? In addition, there was also a lot of talk of French language holidays in France or perhaps going to China to learn Mandarin. Ah…the choices!
