Location

It has been said that you can’t paint Seville because Seville itself is a painting.  It’s hard to define this gorgeous city of warm light and scents—scents of cloves, lemon and orange groves, olives, frying fish and honeysuckle.  Something in the air sharpens the senses—whatever it is seduced the Moors from the deserts of Africa and kept them here for eight centuries.  Seville, the capital of Andalucia, is impossible not to love.  Considered the most beautiful city in Spain, it possesses a vibrant personality and explosion of colours.  The contrast between the modern and the traditional remind you that, while Seville has been enjoying a contemporary building boom for the last 20 years, this is a city with a history dating back to Phoenician times (1000 BC).  With cultural activities ranging from flamenco to bullfighting at the famous Maestranza Bullring, and cuisine that is thought by many to be the best in southern Spain, Seville offers something for everyone.

With a population just under 700,000, Seville is an easy city to explore.  All the major historical and cultural sites, as well as the host school and accommodation, are within walking distance of each other.  Some of the most unspoiled beaches of Europe are just an hour away.  And Doñana National Park, Europe's most important wetland reserve and a major site for migrating birds, makes for a fascinating and easily accessible day trip.

Note to Star Wars fans: You might recognize the Plaza de España as the site where scenes were shot for Planet "Naboo" in later Star Wars films.

Program

The Seville 50 Plus Language Learning Holiday program is the perfect combination of Spanish lessons and cultural activities that you can enjoy with other participants from around the world. The Spanish lesson component consists of 20 Spanish lessons per week. The Spanish language program is complimented by a specially-designed activity program which includes four afternoons or evenings of pre-paid social and cultural activities as well as a welcome event, a concert or theatre evening, a meal with the teacher and a full day excursion on Saturday to a nearby town or place of interest such as Cordoba. Please see the sample schedule page for more information.

Lessons

The course consist of 4 lessons per day, Monday to Friday from 9:15 AM to 1:00 PM. Emphasis is on oral expression, as well as social and cultural aspects rather than grammar analysis and written skills.  Special attention is paid to the needs of the older learner.  The key objective, regardless of level, is communication.  You will develop skills you can immediately put into practice in local shops, restaurants, reading the newspaper or watching TV.

Teachers

All teachers are native Spanish speakers and University graduates. They have had intense training and update their skills regularly in workshops and classes aimed at renewing and optimizing their teaching techniques and materials.

Accommodation

The accommodation options include one and two bedroom apartments and family homestays.  All are within walking distance of the school.

  • Private apartment (one or two people): All apartments are centrally located and fully equipped with a living room, bathroom, kitchen and one bedroom.  They are all located in the centre of the city.
  • Higher standard apartment (one or two people): Entirely furnished and fully-equipped one and two bedroom apartments in Seville’s centre with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. The apartments are bright, tastefully furnished and have air-conditioning, heating, TV and an oven. The communal roof terrace and patios offer a pleasant environment for relaxing outdoors.
  • Homestay Family: Staying with families is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and local culture.  Families are selected on the basis of their hospitality and positive feedback from students.  This option is available as full or half-board.  Weekly laundry and cleaning is included.
  • Higher standard homestay family: Much like the standard homestay family but in addition to the normal amenities, rooms have private bathroom.

*Listed above are the recommended accommodation options for this program.  Alternatively, you may book the course only and arrange your own accommodation in local hotels or apartments.  Please see the prices page for Course Only Fees.
