Spanish Language Holiday Course

Location

In 1890 Costa Rica held Latin America’s first honest elections and this highly-literate and educated country has been a tropical democracy ever since.  The only nation in Latin America with no army, stable and safe Costa Rica is politically mature, but blissfully wild.  Thirty-five percent of its land is devoted to national parks or nature preserves.  San Jose, the cosmopolitan capital of Central America, is a city of sophisticated nightlife, office towers, shopping, restaurants, museums, and bustling markets, but best of all, it’s the jumping off point for the ecological paradise at its doorstep.  From hidden cloud forests to active volcanoes, vibrant green mountains, rushing rivers, bountiful wildlife, secluded beaches, and hot springs, Costa Rica is a nature lover’s dream.

Program

Merengue and Salsa dance lessons are offered once a week, along with visits to museums, films, and other cultural activities which vary from week to week.  Students can also participate in cooking classes.  Once a month, students bring typical dishes from their country to share.  The school also organizes a variety of optional activities and excursions at discounted rates. There is a volunteer placement option available in San Jose. Lessons

Students meet for four hours from Monday through Friday in mini groups of eight students or fewer. These classes usually take place in the morning from 8 AM to 12 PM.  Some students might be assigned classes in the afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m.

Teachers

Teachers are highly trained to provide classes that are relaxing, fun-filled, and effective.  All the teachers have studied at the university level and several of them have degrees in linguistics as well as teaching certifications. The main role of the teacher is to be a motivator and a facilitator rather than a lecturer, so the student is able to express his or her individuality while relating to others in Spanish.

The school staff has participated in ACTFL-OPI (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages - Oral Proficiency Interview) workshops and some are OPI Spanish official testers.

Accommodation

You will stay with warm and welcoming host families who will make you feel as if you are one of the family.  At home you will eat local Costa Rican cuisine and learn about local customs.  A private room, house keys, breakfast, dinner and laundry service are all provided.   Families are chosen for their interest in sharing Costa Rican culture with foreigners.
