Location

The name Bordeaux conjures up images of legendary red wines, Gothic cathedrals, and breathtaking 18th century chateaux that rise up from the gently rolling hills. Bordeaux is both a city and region, the region producing the largest selection of fine wines in the world. Several vineyard tours offer a fascinating overview, and the choice reds and whites are celebrated every other June at the Bordeaux Wine Festival.  Besides wine, Bordeaux is intoxicating for its culture and architecture. The city boasts numerous buildings and monuments dating back to the 11th century.

As if that isn't enough, Bordeaux is a shopper's and eater's paradise.  Some of the world's most popular luxury brand names are on elegant parade in famous stores such as Cartier, Hermes and Louis Vuitton. Fortunately, visitors aren't forced to spend top-dollar on upscale designer shops, as there are numerous less expensive French chains and locally-owned boutiques.  For the foodie, restaurants abound, all striving to maintain the famous city’s long-standing reputation as Gourmet Bordeaux.  Some delightful specialties include oysters from the Bassin d'Arcachon; sole from the Côte d'Argent; the famous Tome Aquitaine—a goat cheese plus Sauterne—and the unforgettable local foie gras. But Bordeaux's greatest secret may be its outstanding location.  Use the city as your launching point to stunning beaches and fishing villages to the west, the magnificent pine forests of Landes, Basque country and the Pyrenees to the south, castles and the prehistoric caves of Dordogne to the east, and the fortified town of La Rochelle and beaches of Royan to the north.

Bordeaux is a city—and region—with something to please everyone.
